How Tile Coverage Is Calculated

Our Tile Calculator determines how many tiles you need to cover a given floor area. It accounts for grout line width between tiles and adds a waste factor to ensure you have enough material for cuts and breakage.

Formulas

Floor Area Floor Area = Floor Length × Floor Width

Tile Area (with grout) Tile Area = (Tile Length + Grout) × (Tile Width + Grout) ÷ 144

Tiles Needed Tiles = ⌊Floor Area ÷ Tile Area⌋ (rounded up)

Boxes Needed Boxes = ⌊Tiles Needed ÷ 10⌋ (rounded up, 10 tiles/box)

Real-Life Examples

Bathroom

8 ft × 5 ft bathroom with 12″ × 12″ tiles and ¼″ grout needs 39 tiles (4 boxes), plus 4 waste tiles at 10%.

Kitchen

12 ft × 10 ft kitchen with 6″ × 6″ tiles and ¼″ grout needs 443 tiles (45 boxes), plus 45 waste tiles at 10%.

Outdoor Patio

20 ft × 15 ft patio with 24″ × 24″ tiles and ½″ grout needs 72 tiles (8 boxes), plus 8 waste tiles at 10%.

Living Room

18 ft × 14 ft living room with 18″ × 18″ tiles and ¼″ grout needs 109 tiles (11 boxes), plus 11 waste tiles at 10%.
