About Body Fat Calculator

Our Body Fat Calculator helps you estimate your body fat percentage using two scientifically validated methods: the U.S. Navy circumference method and BMI-based estimation. The U.S. Navy method uses body measurements (waist, neck, and hip for women) to estimate body fat, while the BMI-based method uses your BMI, age, and gender. The calculator provides detailed results including body fat percentage, classification, fat mass, lean body mass, and a visual gauge.

About Body Fat Percentage

What is Body Fat Percentage?

Body fat percentage is the proportion of your total body weight that is composed of fat tissue. Unlike total body weight alone, body fat percentage provides a more accurate picture of your body composition and overall health. It distinguishes between fat mass and lean body mass (muscles, bones, organs, and water).

How Body Fat Is Calculated

U.S. Navy Body Fat Formula

Male: %BF = 86.010 × log10(waist − neck) − 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76
Female: %BF = 163.205 × log10(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 × log10(height) − 78.387

BMI-Based Estimation

Male: %BF = 1.20 × BMI + 0.23 × Age − 16.2
Female: %BF = 1.20 × BMI + 0.23 × Age − 5.4

Tips for Accurate Measurements

  • Measure in the morning before eating for consistent results
  • Use a flexible tape measure placed snug against the skin, not tight
  • Waist: Measure at the narrowest point, around the navel level
  • Neck: Measure just below the Adam's apple (men) or at the narrowest point (women)
  • Hip (women): Measure at the widest point of the hips/buttocks
  • Take measurements 2-3 times and use the average for better accuracy
