How Gravel Volume Is Calculated

Our Gravel Calculator determines the volume and weight of gravel needed to cover a given area at a specified depth. It supports rectangular, triangular, and circular shapes, and automatically converts between Imperial and Metric units.

Formulas

Rectangle Area = Length × Width

Triangle Area = 0.5 × Base × Height

Circle Area = π × (Diameter ÷ 2)²

Volume Volume (ft³) = Area × (Depth ÷ 12)

Cubic Yards Cubic Yards = Volume (ft³) ÷ 27

Weight Weight (tons) = Volume (ft³) × Density ÷ 2000

Real-Life Examples

Driveway

20 ft × 12 ft driveway at 3″ deep needs 60 ft³ (2.22 yd³) of crushed stone — approximately 3.15 tons.

Walkway

30 ft × 3 ft garden walkway at 2″ deep needs 15 ft³ (0.56 yd³) of pea gravel — approximately 0.75 tons.

Garden Bed

10 ft diameter circular garden bed at 4″ deep needs 26.18 ft³ (0.97 yd³) of river rock — approximately 1.31 tons.

Drainage

15 ft × 8 ft drainage area at 6″ deep needs 60 ft³ (2.22 yd³) of crushed stone — approximately 3.28 tons.
